What Sharpening Actually Does (The Technical Version)

If you're sharpening images for use on a website, there are a couple of things to keep in mind beyond the visual result:
Sharpening increases file size slightly. More edge contrast means more variation between adjacent pixels, which compresses less efficiently than smooth gradients. After sharpening, check the file size and compress if needed. The goal is a sharp image that's still fast to load — not a trade-off between the two.
Sharpening for screen vs. print is different. Screen display is typically 72–96 PPI; print is 300 PPI. An image that looks correctly sharpened on screen may look over-sharpened in print, and vice versa. If you're sharpening for print, output at a lower amount than you'd use for web.
Export format matters. PNG preserves sharpening with no additional quality loss. JPEG will re-compress the image, which can soften fine detail. A Note on Over-Sharpening
